The first publications from the ObSERVE aerial project are now available!

Jessopp, M. J., Richardson, N., Bennison, A., & Rogan, E. (2017). New record of a group of Belugas (Delphinapterus leucas, Pallas) in Irish waters. Irish Naturalist's Journal, 35(2), 148-149.

Breen, P., Cañadas, A., Cadhla, O. Ó., Mackey, M., Scheidat, M., Geelhoed, S. C. V., Rogan, E., & Jessopp, M. (2017). New insights into ocean sunfish (Mola mola) abundance and seasonal distribution in the northeast Atlantic. Scientific Reports, 7(1), 2025. doi:10.1038/s41598-017-02103-6

See below for example sightings data across the four survey periods. Sightings will be analysed to produce robust abundance and density estimates for these species in Irish waters.

Below is an example density distribution for Ocean sunfish sighted during aerial surveys in summer 2015 and 2016. Sightings were modelled along with environmental covariates such as water depth, ocean temperature and productivity and distance to coast among others to highlight areas of increased occurrence. These density distributions are being generated for all species where sufficient sightings data is available.
